The Digital SAT, Explained
By the Cheetah Prep team
The SAT is now fully digital, taken on a laptop or tablet in the College Board's Bluebook app. It is shorter than the old paper test, it adapts to how you are doing, and it still scores out of 1600. This guide walks through how the whole thing works, then links to a deeper page on each part.
The Short Version
The digital SAT has two sections, Reading and Writing and Math, and it takes 2 hours and 14 minutes plus a 10 minute break. There are 98 questions total. Each section is split into two equal modules, and the difficulty of your second module depends on how you did on the first. Everything runs in Bluebook, which includes a built in Desmos calculator you can use on all of the Math.
The score works exactly as it did on paper. Each section is scored from 200 to 800, and the two add up to a total from 400 to 1600. What changed is the format and the length, not the scale, so a 1400 today means the same thing a 1400 meant on the old test.
| Part | Time | Questions |
|---|---|---|
| Reading and WritingModule 1 | 32 min | 27 |
| Reading and WritingModule 2 | 32 min | 27 |
| Break | 10 min | — |
| MathModule 1 | 35 min | 22 |
| MathModule 2 | 35 min | 22 |
| Total testing time | 2h 14m | 98 |
Testing time excludes the 10 minute break, so the full appointment runs about 2 hours 24 minutes before check in.
See how the adaptive routing works
Each section has two modules. Everyone gets the same mixed-difficulty first module. Choose how it went to see which second module you would be routed to.
Module 1 (same for everyone)
A fixed mix of easy, medium, and hard questions.
