UIUC, the University of Illinois flagship in Champaign, IL, is a public university with 36,258 students, one of the larger flagship campuses in the Midwest. That scale cuts both ways. The section splits matter here. Math runs 660 to 780 while Reading and Writing runs 650 to 740, so Math sets the higher bar by a wide margin at the top. A 720 Math score sits in the middle of the range at UIUC; a 720 in Reading and Writing sits near the 75th percentile. The testing policy shapes the strategy too. UIUC is test optional in the most recent federal data, which means the scores you see come only from students who chose to send them, and that choice skews the numbers upward. A score inside or above the range is worth sending. One below it is worth withholding, and your energy goes to the transcript and essays instead.

If your GPA sits near the bottom of that band, or just under it, a strong SAT is the fastest offset available. Grades take years to move. A score can move in one test cycle, and a 1440 or better puts a concrete counterweight next to a 3.6.

Set 1310 as your floor. At or above the 25th percentile keeps you in range for UIUC, and 1520 or higher puts you in the top quarter of admits. Given the section splits, weight your prep toward Math: 660 is the 25th percentile there, and 780 is the 75th, a ceiling most admits do not reach. In Reading and Writing, 650 keeps you in range and 740 clears the top quarter. The average of 1440 is a useful midpoint target if the 75th percentile feels far off today.

Because UIUC is test optional, the score decision is yours, which makes an honest baseline the first order of business. Take a diagnostic to get a current read, then use score plans to map the section by section path from that baseline to 1310 or beyond. If the diagnostic lands inside the range already, your job is to protect and extend the lead. If it lands below, you know the exact gap in points. Once you have both numbers, book your test date and work backward from it.
